Club History
The
Waynesville Tigers Youth Wrestling Club was formed in 1992 and is a
non-profit organization in the State of Missouri. We are a member of
Missouri USA Wrestling and travel all over the state of Missouri
competing at different state and National level tournaments. Our
coaches are either Bronze or copper level certified and volunteer their
time and experience in order to keep the club running every year. We
solicit monetary donations from area businesses to help defray the cost
of uniforms, equipment and tournaments from the wrestlers and families.
Wrestling History
Here
s a good trivia question to spring at a party: What is the oldest
organized sport ever practiced? . You guessed it, Wrestling! No other
sport even comes close. If your child chooses to wrestle you can tell
them they are part of a tradition dating back fifteen thousand years as
evidenced in cave drawings, ancient pottery and other artifacts.
Wrestling was later popular in Greek and Egyptian culture, and is
prevalent in the architecture of many temples and tombs. Match results
are recorded in Japan dating back to the year 22 BC. Wrestling was also
a common element of Native American culture prior to the arrival of
European settlers. Wrestling was alive and well throughout
American history and even included participants such as George
Washington and Abraham Lincoln. In the 1920 s wrestling drew record
crowds in places like Madison Square Gardens with matches sometimes
lasting hours or until one of the contestants would withdraw due to
exhaustion. Wrestling, at that time, drew more spectators than any other
sport.
